J.P. Mitchell Obituary

J. P. (Juano Prillerman) "Mitch Man" Mitchell, age 67, died at Pikes Peak Hospice Unit at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Wednesday, July 12, 2017. The cause was chronic pulmonary disease and cancer. Born December 11, 1949, in Charleston,West Virginia to Iris E. and Beuford M. Mitchell. Hewas a resident of Institute, WV living with his grandmother and two sisters until he was 14 years old.Juano spent a few years in Louisville, Kentucky were he attended Central High School. He graduated from Springs Vally High School in French Lick, Indiana. He served in the U.S. Navy from May 1969 to February 1971 and was decorated with a National Defense Service Medal during his tour of duty.  Out of the marriage union in 1973 were three children. Many years later he met and remarried toDiana Proctor of Colorado Springs in August 2000. Juano started his railroad career with the Louisville and Nashville Railroad as a Switchman in 1972 and later was promoted to Engineer, one of the first Black Americans to achieve that rank. In 2005 he was hired by the Union Pacific Railroad as an Engineer until retiring in 2012. He lived in many different places after leaving Institute -- including Louisville, Kentucky, French Lick, Indiana, Los Angeles, California, Kingsville, Texas and New Orleans, Louisana before settling back in Colorado Springs in 2013.   J.P. will be especially remembered for his quick wit, spirit of adventure, big heart and strongwill that allowed him to make friends easily in many diverse endeavors. He was a dedicated Harely Davidson motorcycle rider. A devoted husband, father and brother that will be missed eternally. Survivors include his wife, Diana L. Mitchell, five sisters and one brother (Karen L. Anderson, S. Lucia Mitchell, Janice L. Newbill, Denise A. Profit, Howard A. W. Boyd, Jr. and Iris P. Cantrill), two deceased brothers and one sister (Don and Beuford Mitchell and Marilyn Allen), three daughters (Adrianne Keene, step daughters-Andrea Borega and Kim Jackson), three sons (Theodore (Chuck) Mitchell, Juano Mitchell,and Angelo Mitchell and one son-in-law, Ben Jackson. Also a host of grand children and great grand children, neices and great neices, nephews and great nephews, cousins and friends mourn him. Memorial Services will be held in the future with dates and places to be announced on line atwww.simplycremeationco.com. His remains will be shared with family members and buried at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central (a national veterans cemetary) in Radcliff, Kentucky. Relatives and friends are welcome at the memorial services when held.
