Obituary for Janet L. Schmid

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Janet, our loving, devoted wife and mother and friend to all whose lives she touched, on October 30th, 2021.

Janet L. Schmid, age 79, passed away at Penrose Hospital Colorado Springs, CO.   She was born April 17th, 1942 in Jersey City to James and Louise Cleary. 

She attended Richfield Park High School and received her RN Nursing degree from Clara Maass Nursing School, Belleville, NJ in 1963.  She became an Administrative Coordinator at Raritan Valley Hospital, Raritan, NJ from 1968 – 1971. She worked at Hunterdon Medical Center from 1971 – 1988, starting out as a part time staff nurse, moving into an Assistant Director of Inservice and served as the Infection Control Nurse until 1988.  She then worked for the Lyon’s Veterans Hospital in Lyons, NJ as an Infection Control Administrator until she retired due to disability in 1992.

She also attended Trenton State College and received her Teaching Degree in 1984. 

She also served as President of the NJ State Nurses Association, District 3,  for an unprecedented 3 terms from 1977 – 1983.  A scholarship in her name is opened at Clara Maas Hospital for deserving nursing students.

Janet was a member of Eastern Star and was a Worthy Matron.

Janet and Harald moved to Colorado in 1992.  Janet saw a need at the local Salida Hospital for a more robust Infection Control department and volunteered her time and knowledge to help as well as many Medical Books to assist the team.

Janet also volunteered her time and knowledge to help set up the Heath Ministry at St. Rose of Lima Church in Buena Vista.

Janet was a great source and comfort to her friends and family and would not hesitate to offer her help to anyone who needed it.  She shared her medical knowledge and time with anyone in need.

Janet is survived by her Husband of 58 years, Harald Schmid , her daughter Carolyn Schmid and her husband Terence Hyde, her brother and his wife James and Betty Cleary and their son Bobbie Cleary.  Her son, Donald Schmid passed away in 2011.

A Memorial Service will be held to Remember and Honor the wonderful woman she was.
